Movers & Shakers: M&C Saatchi, Starcom, VMLY&R, HERO, Atomic 212°

It's hard to keep up with all the latest moves across media, marketing and advertising, so we've made a list. Check out some of the biggest moves this week.

M&C Saatchi CEO Moray MacLennan retires

Moray MacLennan is retiring as the global CEO of M&C Saatchi, the agency he helped found. He will step down September 30. The board of directors will conduct a comprehensive executive search process to identify a new chief executive. 

HERO Australia's Ben Coulson departs

Ben Coulson, chief creative officer at HERO, is leaving after more than three years at the agency. He joined HERO in June 2020. HERO was founded that year by Ben Lilley - as a new independent, integrating creative, media and technology.

Broadsheet appoints three to editorial team

Publisher Broadsheet has appointed three new editors to its national editorial team. Michael Harry is national editor reporting to editorial director Katya Wachtel and managing the Cities team. Grace Mackenzie has taken up the Sydney food and drink editor role, and Audrey Payne is the Melbourne food and drink editor. 

Starcom appoints Louise Romeo COO

Starcom Australia has promoted Louise Romeo to chief operating officer. Romeo steps into the newly created role from her previous position as national head of operations and Investment at the agency. Romeo will be charged with developing and establishing nationally standardised policies and procedures across Starcom’s workflow to continue to advance efficiencies for clients.

Alison Izzo and Elise Wright join Are Media

Alison Izzo has joined Are Media as head of digital strategy and implementation and Elise Wright has been appointed social media strategy manager. Izzo will be responsible for driving best practice digital content strategy and digital content creation. Wright will help lead Are Media’s social strategy, growing social followers, increasing social engagement with its brands and ensuring social media is baked into the company’s content commerce strategy. 

Atomic 212° Melbourne invests in new talent

Australian independent media agency, Atomic 212°, has expanded its strategic and account service capabilities in Melbourne with the appointment of a new strategy director, two new group account directors and a strategist. The appointments follow a strong start to 2023 nationally, including new additions to the agency’s Sydney leadership team and the expansion of the Atomic 212° Brisbane office.

VMLY&R expands senior creative and strategy teams in Brisbane

VMLY&R has appointed four new senior hires. Creative director Mikey Tucker joins the agency having recently returned to Brisbane from Europe. Lisa O'Neill joins as associate creative director. Strategy director Dilip Garga joined the agency this week from Ogilvy Singapore. Jessamy Ross completes the line up as senior copywriter; she is currently head of AWARD School.

Principals appoints The Monkeys' Tom Sykes strategy director New Zealand

Branding design agency Principals has appointed Tom Sykes to strategy director of its Aotearoa New Zealand office. Sykes comes with more than 13 years of planning and strategy experience, moving across from The Monkeys Aotearoa, part of Accenture Song, where he was head of planning. Before that, he was a lead strategist at DDB Group New Zealand working across DDB, TRACK, Interbrand and Tribal Worldwide.

Edge appoints Ben Smith ECD

Independent creative agency Edge has appointed Ben Smith executive creative director, following a long stint working with the agency as a contractor. Smith’s career to date has seen him work in both Australia and the US, for some of the most respected agencies out there – winning a slew of awards and building a reputation as a heavyweight creative thinker along the way.

Forethought names Christina Tonkes GM of consulting marketing advisory

Marketing advisory, strategy and analytics firm, Forethought, has appointed Christina Tonkes as general manager of Consulting. Tonkes first launched her career in the firm’s Grad Program in 2007. Since then, she has worked both agency and client side.
