Meta unveils parental supervision tools on Messenger

Meta has introduced supervision tools on Messenger to allow parents to see how their teens are using the platform, in a way that respects their privacy.

The first set of parental supervision tools on Messenger will allow parents and guardians to get updates on changes to their teen’s Messenger contact list, as well as their teen’s privacy and safety settings.

They can also get notified if their teen reports someone (if the teen chooses to share that information), view who can message their teen (only their friends, friends of friends, or no one) and if their teen changes this setting, and also who can see their teen’s Messenger stories.

Meta made the announcement at its recent Youth Safety Summit in Singapore, which was held from August 29-30 and brought together safety specialists across Asia Pacific, including BRAC, ECPAT International, Netsafe, UNICEF, and the Stairway Foundation and Australian partners, Butterfly, Project Rockit, Save The Children & ReachOut.

Antigone Davis, Meta’s global head of safety, said in recent years, the tech company has developed more than 30 tools to support families, including supervision tools that help parents and teens work together to manage teens’ time on its apps.

"We’re committed to making sure teens have age-appropriate experiences across our technologies, and we’ll continue working with safety experts as we build tools for young people and their families,” said Davis.

These supervision tools sit alongside other features that Meta has launched, including tools that help teens have safer and more private experiences, further restricting the options advertisers have to reach teens and providing them with more tools to better manage their experience on Instagram.
