Janice Chan: account manager at Murmur-Group

Time in current role:

Three months.

How would you describe what the company does?

We’re a strategic marketing and advertising agency. At the core of our DNA is media strategy, planning and effective buying - always underpinned by performance.

Ultimately, we’re a service-based business which simply means we are in the business of helping our clients solve their business problems and reach their audiences effectively and on target.

Clients work with us for our seamless collaboration across their entire business - not just the media or marketing elements - so that we can maximise our client’s campaigns. A point of difference that makes Murmur stand out from the pack.

What do I do day to day?

My role revolves around a lot of strengthening my relationships with clients and partners which includes being in a lot of calls, buying and planning media plans and problem solving during chaotic times.

Define your job in one word:


I got into my industry because:

I finished my Master’s in Law, Media and Journalism and realised I didn’t want to be in the legal industry. Hence, gave media a shot and have been here ever since!

What’s the biggest industry wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?

Being under-resourced.

Previous companies:

Dentsu and UM.

Notable campaigns/initiatives:

We launched numerous campaigns for NDRC events and the Top Fuel NSW Xmas Showdown made it to one of the Top 5 Performance Marketing Campaigns in early Dec last year. Another campaign that I really love is the one we have live for BARC at the moment to increase awareness for dog adoption! We hope that people know they have the option to adopt to save these animals’ lives.

Who has been a great mentor to you?

My dad, he’s given me a lot of career advice. Also growing up, he’s always taught me to not give up, try a little harder and go an extra mile.

Words of advice:

There are no stupid questions.

If I wasn’t doing this for a living:

I would be travelling and exploring the world.

My philosophy is:

Always try your hardest so you don’t live with any regrets.

My favourite advert is:

Nike’s 'Just do it' - it still is one of the strongest advertising campaigns since 1988. Not only did it achieve strong market branding and identity but it also brings emotional appeal as an everyday slogan.

Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?

Netflix and Spotify.

In five years’ time, I'll be:

Hopefully leading a team of bright people in the media industry.
