Facebook has attracted 10 million active users in Australia, as the social network confirms location-based advertising tool Deals will launch down under in the new year.

The social network said the rate of growth was driven predominantly by use of Facebook on smartphones and mobile devices. It represents growth of 100% in just under eighteen months.

Facebook has not revealed a launch date for Deals, which is tied into Facebook Places and allows members to report their whereabouts in real time.

In November, Facebook regional vice president Paul Borrud revealed that Facebook had nine million active users, up from five million in early 2009 [AdNews, 19 November, page 4].

He said Australian Facebook users are more engaged with the site than any other country, with the average Australian user spending more than seven hours a month on the site.

The average Australian user goes to the site 27 times a month, and 62% of users log in every day.
