Employees are ready for the metaverse but companies are holding back

Companies are not quite ready to get employees working in the metaverse.

A study by recruiters Aquent, Getting Versed in the Metaverse, based on a survey of 3,484 from Australia and the US, shows that developing employee experiences in the metaverse isn't a priority.

More than 33% of VPs and directors agreed that organisations are ill-prepared and slow to move. What is holding them back?

Alex Kenning, managing director at Aquent Australia: "We believe it’s security issues, a limited budget to access necessary hardware, limited knowledge around virtual spaces and how they operate, and possibly a lack of skilled talent that could be contributing to this sluggishness.

"When it comes to employee experience, opportunities are endless to transition a number of initiatives into the metaverse to help build connectivity, community, and engagement.

"Employees are ready for the future, and more than 80% of them agree that some of a company’s work processes and experiences should transition to the metaverse.

"While 19% cannot imagine this type of transition, we’re confident that this belief is simply a lack of awareness and understanding of the metaverse and the opportunity it brings.

"Employee experiences topping the metaverse transition list were immersive and interactive learning, team meetings, and onboarding. However, age groups showed some varying preferences.

"Survey respondents under 40 preferred the metaverse for recruitment and workplace tours, but would rather connect in person for onboarding, one-on-one meetings, and water-cooler conversations. Those aged 56+ favour attending social and corporate events in person versus online."
