Advertising's obsession with creating videos to win awards

Are agencies obsessed with creating case videos that resonate with award judges rather than target consumers?

Zulu Alpha Kilo, a Canadian agency, has been poking fun at the internal workings of agencies for some years now.

One was Billy’s Lemonade, about what really happens inside an independent agency when it gets taken over by a big player.

In the latest, Zulu Alpha Kilo says most people, asked to name their favourite ad, are more likely to name a hilarious beer commercial than the latest Gold Lion winner.

What’s more important: winning over awards judges or winning over consumers?

Zulu Alpha Kilo's video, Left-Handed Mango Chutney, is set at a dinner party where a brain surgeon tells how he saves lives.

Then it’s the turn of copywriter Greg who announces his latest project, a case study for Left-Handed Mango Chutney.

Left-Handed Mango Chutney debuted at Canada’s Agency of the Year competition in Toronto.

Agencies are invited to create their own promo videos about whatever subject they want.

Zulu has been using these videos as a platform to push back against the industry’s sacred cows.

Last year’s Awards Gone Wild poked fun at the industry’s awards obsession by showing what would happen if other professions resorted to these same tactics.

One of the most well-known examples was Say No to Spec which started a movement against spec work in new business pitches.

Another is the World’s Worst RFP.

Agency founder and CCO Zak Mroueh once again directed this year’s video through the agency’s in-house production arm, Zulubot. This is also his third consecutive collaboration with the creative team of Jonah Flynn and Michael Siegers.
