Advertising agency staff in Australia and New Zealand have been adding their salary details to a global spreadsheet, part of a project to create transparancy in job roles and pay.

The Google doc, Real Agency Salaries, gives a run down on pay and other information including job title, department, gender and years of experience.

Commentators have identfiied, from the spreadsheet numbers, what they call striking disparities in pay.

"Talking about how much or how little money you make feels taboo, and it shouldn't,” says the author of the document.

"Wouldn't it be great to know what your peers make so you can use that to leverage a raise? Or if your company does a market adjustment yet you don't see the data, wouldn't it be great to know how accurate it is or isn't?

"So, let's share what we make and any relevant info to help each other learn our worth."

News of the initiative caused a run of people in Australia and New Zealand to add their details and to check what others in similar roles are being paid.

AdNews analysed 101 entries from Australia and New Zealand. There are now almost 3,800 entries, mostly from the US.

The top 12 people from Australia and New Zealand are being paid more than $150,000 a year.

Their jobs roles include strategy director, senior copywriter, senior account director, senior art director and creative director.

The highest paid is a managing director at $300,000 a year. The woman lives in Auckland and works for an in-house operation.

Of the top 12 best paid, eight are women. Of the 101 entries, 56 are from women.

The average pay is almost $98,000.

The lowest paid, who gave their job title as account executive, gets $45,000 a year.

Those in the middle of the pay range give their roles as senior account manager, account director and art director.
