Australian financial comparison website Compare the Market has been working with Meerkat duo Aleksandr and Sergei since 2009 to provide financial coaching and inspire better money management across Australia.

The original campaign was launched by advertising agency VCCP and quickly became a success for comparethemarket.com, prompting further ads, increased sales in merchandise and a book featuring Aleksandr Orlov, a character commonly referenced throughout each Compare the Market campaign.

The introduction to Aleksandr and his trusted engineer Sergei, saw aristocratic Russian Meerkats comparing the market, by comparing the meerkats. The aristocrat is frustrated by the amount of visitors looking for car insurance on the site and re-directs consumers to the compare the market site for the best deals in insurance to avoid confusion.

Now, Compare the Market is tackling the cost of living in its latest ‘Meerkat Motivationals' campaign to encourage Australians to "wake up to waste" in their household budget.

Compare the Market’s executive general manager of marketing, Andrew Holt, said: “This year is already proving to be another stressful year for Australians, with price increases across every major household expense, including energy bills, mortgage repayments and insurance premiums.

“As Aleksandr and Sergei would say, we should all ‘wake up to waste’, ‘keep an eye on the rises’ and make sure ‘not another cent is misspent’."
