Inside The Nest- week three, deeper down the rabbit hole

17 October 2014

Let me just start off by saying if week one was a whirlwind, week’s two and three have been a hurricane! Whether it is competitive analysis and pitch work for new clients, presenting our creative ideas to existing clients or working internally on award submissions for Leo Burnett, I’ve got my metaphorical fingers in all the pies, and then some!

The first thing I want to do is share with you a thought that crossed my mind in my second week of The Nest. It was ‘Leo Burnett can actually use you’. Let me explain that for a moment because I’m sure more than a few of you out there are probably thinking ‘Who let Captain Obvious write the blog?’

Of course they can use me. They can use my coffee carrying abilities and my printing and stapling skills but instead they choose not to. They instead choose to use me for my ability and my willingness to learn. I can’t tell you the number of times someone from the agency has come over to Justine and I, introduced themselves, given us a run-down of what they are working on and asked if we had any free time and were interested in being a part of the process?

“No stress though if you are too busy”

Too busy? Not a chance!

So what’s been happening?

Let me give you an example from two weeks ago. Rachel Bean, Business Director, informed me that Leo Burnett had been nominated for numerous industry awards and she had been in charge of overseeing the submission process- and now, the final presentation process. She asked if I could work alongside her in organising numerous aspects for the final submission. Now obviously I can’t really give any detail as to what this entails but I will say that it was on this project I got to write my first execution brief to the creative department.

Speaking of working with the creative department, do you remember from my last blog that I was taking the lead on a digital brief? Well let me give you a heads up as to where we are with that. A fortnight ago we rewrote the client brief in to a creative brief and then briefed the creative team on the project. Last week the team came back to us with a number of concept territories (these are essentially broad concept areas that don’t necessarily include specific executions), which we then presented to the client. Yes, herein lies another first for me, I actually got to present real material to a real client! Now I’m not sure how that sounds to you, but to someone who has spent more days than I care to count presenting hypothetical pitches, analysis and critiques at University, that was like graduation day for me. Welcome to the real world.

It’s goodbye already!?

Alas, once again I am out of space and time. If that’s not enough bad news for you, it gets worse; this is my last blog to you (oh I know you’re all crying at your computer, or smartphone, or tablet, or… well you get the picture). Justine will finish up our half of the blog posts next week and then we’ll hand over to our very talented counterparts, Stephanie and Alex. I just want to say an enormous thankyou to all at Leo Burnett with special mention to my mentor and account service extraordinaire Neil Duncan. There are so many more things I want to tell you all about but I guess you’re just going to have to apply for The Nest 2015 and find out for yourself. Adios!
