Initiative Australia chief executive Tracie Michael is to step down from the agency, effective December 31.

Michael, who has been in the role since May 2010, said the decision was personal and she was not moving into another role.

"After extensive considerations about the demands of a national CEO role and its impact on my private life, I have decided to step back from the front line of business for now to spend more time on personal and family matters."

Mediabrands Australia executive chairman Henry Tajer said: "It has been Tracie's decision to step down and spend more time with her active family, which I fully respect and support. Tracie's thoughtful approach to this change will allow time for us to carefully select a new CEO for Initiative and Tracie will remain involved in the day to day agency operations until her departure."

Tajer will assume direct management of the agency, with support from Michael, in the interim period, while the company searches for a new chief executive.

Michael entered the role last year, replacing Roger Camplisson, who left the agency after 15 years. Michael had been Mindshare Sydney managing director.
