The Rainbow Code wants your support

Australians are being asked to show their support for same-sex marriage by taking part in The Rainbow Code, an initiative created by digital agency Holler.

The Rainbow Code involves a piece of code which can added to a blog or website to create a rainbow crossing across the top of the site. That crossing will also create a walkway across the internet by linking sites within the network.

The idea was inspired by Sydney's Taylor Square rainbow crossing, which had been created for the Mardi Gras. It was removed after the event despite protests to keep it permanently. Spontaneous rainbow crossings then started popping up across the city as people drew chalk rainbows in solidarity.

Holler conceived and created The Rainbow Code in less than a week and is calling on individuals and companies to take part to send a message to the federal government. Holler co-chief executive Mike Hill is asking ad agencies to get the ball rolling by being the first companies to sign up.

He is hoping to get 1,000 sites to participate by the end of May. A snapshot of those sites will be sent to federal and state governments calling for legislation for same-sex marriage.

Hill said: “The Taylor Square Rainbow Crossing has become a symbol of people power, to communicate a message of support for equal rights, culture, community, acceptance, pride, love, awareness and celebration.

“Its removal and what this stands for has been a catalyst for thought and consideration. Australia is a progressive nation, we have a progressive spirit, yet there continues to be political opposition toward gay pride and same-sex marriage. The Rainbow Code is an opportunity to build awareness and support for this 'rainbow movement'.

“We're seeing nations around the world progress their laws around marriage equality – New Zealand last week and France overnight. Surely it's time for Australia to take a stance. We hope the Rainbow Code will help Australians demonstrate that this is something we want.”
