The Herald Sun to launch digital subscriptions

Following the rollout of a paywall for The Australian last year, News Limited's Herald Sun will next month launch a digital pass.

The paper will use a “freemium” model, with a mix of free and subscription-only content, with breaking news and content that is widely available from other sources remaining available to all users.

Pricing and packages will be unveiled in coming weeks, however readers will initially be offered a two-month free trial.

The digital pass coincides with a redesigned website and new m-site.

Herald & Weekly Times managing director Peter Blunden said: “We’ve created a new digital offering to meet the changing needs of our readers, while remaining committed to producing Australia’s best newspaper.

“From next month, the Herald Sun will truly be one brand across all platforms and days.”

Blunden said readers were searching for trusted sources that provided a sense of belonging and connection to their community and the Herald Sun could now meet that demand across multiple platforms.

“Victorians have been turning to the Herald Sun as the most popular and most trusted source of news for generations, we are now providing the tools to see this continue in the decades ahead – whenever and wherever readers desire,” he said.

The launch will be supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign across TV, press, digital display, digital performance and search media worth more than $5 million.

Since Rupert Murdoch announced News Corporation’s intentions to launch digital subscriptions in 2009, at least 75 newspapers around the world have begun charging for online journalism.

A report on the progress of The Australian subscription package is due soon.
