My Kitchen Rules beat out MasterChef: The Professionals in the ratings game on Monday.

The battle of the cooking shows has seen My Kitchen Rules claim the chef's hat over MasterChef: The Professionals as its 2013 premiere episode trumped its rival.

The return of My Kitchen Rules saw 1.38 million metro viewers tuned in to the 90-minute program, according to overnight figures from OzTam. It was the third most watched series on Monday night.

The number is marginally down in its 2012 premiere, which attracted 1.48 million viewers. Last year, MKR's popularity built over the season as its ratings climbed towards the end of its run. It regularly pulled in between 1.5 and 2 million viewers.

Its direct time slot and content competitor on Ten, MasterChef: The Professionals, dropped to 893,000 viewers in 10th spot. Last week, it premiered to 1.17 million viewers and held 1.02 million people on both subsequent nights.

The most watched program yesterday was Nine News with 1.57 million viewers, followed by the first half of Seven's hour-long news bulletin which commanded 1.53 million. The second half, which is still coded as Today Tonight in the OzTam ratings, had an average audience of 1.36 million people. A Current Affair managed 918,000 viewers.

Nine's cricket coverage of the Twenty/20 match garnered an audience of 1.37 million people.
