Network Ten managed to secure 20% of the free-to-air audience share last night, despite its MasterChef Australia: Class of 2014 behind-the-scenes special only ranking 14th.

MasterChef was not originally scheduled to air last night, but after Kylie Kwong helped the show surpass a million viewers for the first time last Thursday, Ten rejigged the roster.

But the special won 578,000 viewers - only slightly more than half the number that tuned in the previous Thursday,

Meanwhile, the Adel versus Collingwood AFL game on Seven Mate, which went head-to-head with MasterChef for the first hour but was only aired in Melbourne and Adelaide, pulled in 568,000 viewers across the two cities. It was the 17th most-watched program, according to preliminary overnight ratings figures from OzTam.

Seven's Home and Away and the ABC's Call the Midwife were the only non-news programs in the top 10 last night. Home and Away was sixth, with 783,000 viewers, and Call the Midwife was eighth with an audience of 757,000.

The Seven Network won the night overall, taking 30.5% of the overall audience share, followed by Nine with 24.2%.

Seven's top program was Seven News, which won 1.152 million viewers, followed by Seven's Today Tonight with 1.038 million.

Nine News ranked third with an audience of 1.007 million, Nine News at 6.30 was fourth with 966,000, Nine's A Current Affair was fifth with 805,000, ABC News was seventh with 769,000, ABC News Update was ninth with 751,000, and Ten Eyewitness News was 10th with 675,000.
