A still from Matthew McConaughey's first ad for Wild Turkey

He’s an Acadamy Award winning actor who has featured in more than 40 films, winning women's hearts across the globe with his shirtless performances. The star even has his own tagline.

And now Mathew McConaughey has added ad director to his impressive resume, with the debut of his first piece of creative for iconic American bourbon, Wild Turkey.

Wild Turkey announced in August McConaughey was coming on board as creative director to “serve as chief storyteller both behind the camera and in front of it”. Here's his ad director debut:

Speaking to AdNews, M&C Saatchi Sydney ECD Michael Canning, says: “Hollywood is very good at creating pop culture. Unfortunately this film feels like a celebrity endorsement in an ad, rather than something born of the entertainment world.

"I think a collaboration like this would be more exciting if you see the influence of the entertainment industry that Matthew McConaughey comes from in the idea."

McConaughey tweeted the 30-second ad to his more than two million followers. The reception has so far been positive, with fans congratulating the Oscar winner on his first ad.

The ad isn’t quite as wild as McConaughey’s performance in Magic Mike, rather it could be seen as a generic alcohol ad, with the spot shot in a bar scene, complete with close-up frame of the perfect pour -  but what do you think? Take our poll below.

A component driven by McConaughey that is different for the brand was the decision to use New Orlean’s Hot 8 Brass Band and to shoot the ad in a jazz club rather than a thumping dance club.

The campaign, from J. Walter Thompson in New York and RSA Films in Los Angeles, was shot in Southern California.

JWT New York chief creative officer Brent Choi told AdWeek McConaughey “perfectly embodies” the spirit of Wild Turkey.
