The out-of-home sector has posted a 5.2% revenue growth in the second quarter of 2013 reaching $126.5 million, up from $120.3 million for the same period last year.

The year-to-date has also seen the sector boost its revenue by 4% and reach $248.7 million, compared to the $239 million this time last year.  The figures are from the sector's industry body, The Outdoor Media Association (OMA). PwC has also predicted strong growth over the next five years for the sector.

Meanwhile, the sector of roadside other - which includes street furniture, taxis, bus/tram externals, small format - generated the most revenue for 2013 to date with $89.4 million. Roadside billboards came in next with $82.5 million, followed by transport, including airports, at $40.7 million. Retail took $36.1 million.

The numbers were similar for the second quarter of 2013, led by roadside other with $45.1 million. Roadside billboards attracted $39.8 million, transport garnered $21.1 million, while retail took $20.5 million.

OMA chief executive Charmaine Moldrich said: "The OOH industry continues to remain at the competitive forefront of today's changing media landscape by understanding its audiences, embracing technology, being a responsible community player, and showcasing the medium's unlimited creative potential.

"In addition, our world class audience measurement website MOVE has recently been updated to provide greater functionality, assisting advertisers and agencies to plan campaigns and maximise exposure across 385 million daily contacts across OOH.

"People are spending a greater amount of time outdoors, shopping and commuting, solidifying OOH as the last true broadcast medium in today's fragmented media market."

Last week, the OMA announced its second annual 'Wall of Hands' fundraising initiative with the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF), featuring Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull.
