Digital Music Distribution (DMD), a joint venture of Sony Music Entertainment Australia and Universal Music Australia, has hired Telsta alum Mark Shaw as chief executive officer.

Shaw was previously general manager of Sensis Digital Media, until late last year when the company underwent a management restructure which led to the formation of the Telstra Advertising Network.

Shaw has previously worked in the radio, out-of-home and digital sectors, for companies including Buspak Advertising Group and DMG Radio.

Shaw is the first official chief executive officer to be appointed at DMD. Since its April 2011 launch, the company has had only interim and caretaker management personnel.

DMD provides digital music services direct to broadcasters, media suppliers, brand partners and the general public.

Upcoming projects for DMD include an on-demand, ad-free music subscription service called Songl, which soft launched in October. The official launch of the service is scheduled for the first half of this year.

“We are very pleased to have Mark join DMD,” said Denis Handlin, chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & New Zealand. “He brings a wealth of experience through his substantial background in entertainment, technology and sales industries. The entertainment market and the ways consumers interact with music continues to evolve at a rapid pace and DMD is focused on supplying exciting digital music delivery services.”

Shaw said: “I am really looking forward to the challenge of leading the team at DMD. The business already has outstanding relationships in market across a number of areas and my focus will be to enhance these even further and drive growth into the future across our linear, subscription and brand promotion services. The launch of Songl in the first half of this year is really exciting and I can't wait to work with the team at DMD to bring this brand to life in the Australian and New Zealand markets.”

Shaw's appointment is effective immediately.
