The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) says an opening offer from Nine Entertainment to journalists for a new enterprise agreement has "fallen short".

The union said that MEAA delegates at Nine Publishing met with management last week but that management put forward an opening pay offer "well below the rate of inflation".

"Members at Nine, which publishes the Sydney Morning HeraldThe AgeThe Australian Financial ReviewBrisbane Times and WAToday, are seeking a fair increase to all salaries and allowances, improvement of workplace diversity and commitments about job security and the conditions of engagement of freelancers," the MEAA said in their newsletter.

"Union meetings will be held with members to discuss how to respond to the offer."

A proposed new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) would run to 2027 and deliver an 8% increase in pay in the first year, followed by 6% in the second and third years. The current EBA expires at the end of June.

Nine declined to comment.
