Newspapers to report more data

Newspaper Works members News Limited, Fairfax Media, APN News & Media and West Australian Newspapers have informed the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) that they will increase reporting of circulation data.

The increase in reporting will include full disclosure of daily sales figures. Currently, Monday to Friday data is reported as an average, while daily figures are only released for Saturday and Sunday editions.

The Newspaper Works chief executive Tony Hale said: "We understand and support the request of advertisers and advertising agencies to increase the availability of sales data for national, metropolitan and regional publications.

"Responding to advertisers and agencies, we propose bringing average daily sales reporting for Monday to Friday editions in line with reporting for weekends."

Newspaper publishers are currently in talks with the Audit Bueau of Circulation's Rule Review Sub-Committee, which is made up of the Media Federation of Australia, the Australian Association of National Advertisers as well as magazine and newspaper publishers.

The new reporting structure will commence on 1 July 2011 as part of the ABC's quarterly circulation figures.
