Donald Trump launches first TV ad

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has rolled out his first TV ad for his presidential campaign.

The ad says Trump is calling for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US, he is also going to stop illegal immigration by getting Mexico to build a wall between the two countries. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump is expected to spend at least US$2 million per week on TV ads targeting early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire.

US Government sues VW

The US Department of Justice has taken Volkswagen (VW) to court seeking a ban on cars that cheat diesel emissions.

In September, it emerged the world's biggest carmaker had fitted cars with software that modified diesel emission readings so they complied with US clean air standards. As a result of the scandal, VW's market value plunged by nearly a quarter.

The government's civil suit is seeking between $32,500 and $37,500 for each of the 600,000 automobiles it says are modified with the "defeat devices". The court case does not prevent the government from seeking criminal charges.

More publishers join the Press Council

Three more publications have joined the Australian Press Council: Schwartz Media, publisher of The Saturday Paper, a weekly newspaper, and The Monthly magazine; The Bushland Shire Telegraph, publisher of a weekly community newspaper circulating in the Hawkesbury area of NSW in print and electronic editions; and Emanila.com Pty Ltd, a group of online-only publications serving Australia’s Filipino community.

By joining the Press Council, these publishers are committing to the council’s standards of ethical journalism and its mission to advocate for press freedom.
