27 July 2021

Our Industry Profile takes a look at some of the professionals working across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we speak to April5 CEO and founder Alicia Beachley.

Time in current role/time at the company:
14 years.

How would you describe what the company does?
April5 is a leading marketing agency specialising in brand activation, experiential marketing, consumer promotions and events.

What do you do day-to-day?
I keep all the balls in the air running a busy agency. Every day is different from running activations, pitching for new business, to supporting my amazing team.

Define your job in one word:
Ringmaster.

I got into marketing because:
I didn’t originally seek it, it sought me, and 30 years later we’re still together.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?
Not enough time to do all the things I want to do.

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?
Stopping experienced mid-level, great staff leaving our industry – particularly women.

Previous industry related companies you have worked at:
Hausmann Communications and Creative Sales.

Who has been a great mentor to you and why?
Cam Carter. His deep industry knowledge, his willingness to share, his enthusiasm for my business success, and his exceptional advice are invaluable to me.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?
Remember you always need to think commercially, that business is business, and never burn your bridges.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:
Retired.

My mantra is:
Don’t look back; you’ll only get a sore neck.

My favourite advert is:
The Cadbury ad where the shopkeeper accepts the little girl’s buttons and toys so she can buy chocolate for her Mum. Why? It speaks to me as a Mum.

Music and TV streaming habits. What do you subscribe to?
Spotify and Apple Music, Netflix, Stan and Prime.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I’m an avid gardener and grow all my own vegetables.

In five years' time I'll be:
Celebrating the continued agency success, and selling my veggies at a Farmer’s Market on weekends.
