Commonwealth Bank Group has appointed Ikon Communications to handle its performance media and search business, following a competitive pitch.

Ikon pitched for the business against five agencies, which included digital agencies Amnesia Razorfish and AKQA, which doesn't have an Australian office and pitched for the business through its agency in Singapore.

Ikon will be responsible for the performance media business, which includes paid search, ad exchange trading, demand-side platforms and ad network buys for the Commonwealth Bank, Colonial First State and CommSec from 1 December 2010.

Ikon launched a dedicated division to manage performance-based media in June this year.

Commonwealth Bank chief marketing officer Mark Buckman told AdNews the appointment aimed to align the search business with the Group's media buying and strategy accounts, which are also handled by Ikon.

Commonwealth Bank general manager, channel and direct darketing Andrew Murrell said: “We are looking forward to further working with Ikon to develop a truly integrated model to ensure efficiency and ultimately benefit our business and we congratulate Ikon on their appointment.”

The Commonwealth Bank's search engine optimisation (SEO) account is handled by Bruce Clay.

The paid search account was previously handled by Downstream.
