Facebook has named its VP of product growth Alex Schultz as its new chief marketing officer.

Schultz replaced Antonio Lucio who stepped down in August after two years in the role.

Schultz, who has a background in online marketing and analytics, has been with Facebook since 2007 and has also previously worked at eBay in the UK.

In a Facebook post announcing his promotion, Schultz says he hopes to build on the work of Lucio in telling “meaningful, culturally relevant stories” with brands on the platform by bringing his experience in segmentation, targeting, and measurement to the marketing team.

“I have grown up in online marketing and believe deeply in the economic empowerment it can bring, its ability to show people more tailored, relevant, less annoying ads, and the fact it allows us to serve everyone by offering our products for free,” Schultz said in a Facebook post announcing his promotion.

“I believe deeply in the good Facebook’s products do. We have all seen it through this pandemic as billions of people have connected with family and friends socially online while staying physically apart and slowing the spread of the virus.

“At the same time I think scrutiny of any new technology is appropriate and there are ways we can, and should, improve without losing all the good.”

Facebook has been dealing with an advertising boycott, led by the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, that has included big brands such as Coca-Cola, Diageo and HP. While CEO Mark Zuckerburg has said the boycott didn’t significantly hurt the company’s revenue, the company has spoken out against hate speech on the platform.
