Telstra has appointed Commonwealth Bank chief marketing officer Mark Buckman as chief marketing officer, while Kate McKenzie becomes group managing director, Telstra Innovation, Products and Marketing.

Buckman joins Telstra after five years at the Commonwealth Bank to take on the “redefined” role, which reports to McKenzie, and which will see the telecommunication giant’s Chief Marketing Office rebranded as Telstra Innovation, Products and Marketing.

McKenzie said the changes were a response to the “growing responsibilities and the increased importance of innovation and products including media”.

“Mark joins Telstra with a track record of achieving outstanding business results and helping to drive the CBA’s focus on improved customer service – two strengths that will be highly valued at Telstra, and by our customers and shareholders as we become a true sales and marketing company that is faster to market and more focused on our customers,” said McKenzie.

Buckman joins director of creativity, strategy and brand Mark Collis and director of brand marketing, strategy & planning Inese Kingsmill.

Commonwealth Bank chief marketing officer Mark Buckman said, “While I am sad to be leaving CBA, where I am very proud of what we have accomplished over the past 5 years, I am very excited to be joining Telstra at this exciting time in the company's transformation. The telecommunications industry is going through rapid change and brands have never been more important to help attract and retain customers."

Commonwealth Bank group executive human resources and group services Barbara Chapman will oversee the marketing function while the bank considers its next step.
