The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has opened a consultation on a proposal to remake the Broadcasting Services (Television Captioning) Standard 2013.

The Standard applies to commercial television broadcasters, subscription television broadcasters and narrowcasters and national broadcasters.

It sets out mandatory requirements for the quality of captioning: captions must be readable, accurate and comprehensible so that they are meaningful to viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The Standard is due to sunset on October 1.

ACMA has published a consultation paper and research report on the ACMA website. The paper invites comment on the effectiveness and efficiency of the Standard, and other matters relevant to how captioning quality may be assessed in future.
