Australia has come equal fifth with a total of 35 In Book and Nominations at this year’s D&AD Awards, with Leo Burnett Sydney leading the charge with eight.

There are 23 In Book and 12 Nominations for Australia, down on the 49 in 2013 – a year dominated by McCann Melbourne’s ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ which picked up five Yellow and one Black Pencil.

Leo Burnett Sydney was the best performing Australian agency with two Nominations and six In Books for its work on Bundaberg Rum ‘Road to Recovery’, Coca-Cola’s ‘Small World Machines’ and the Australian Bureau of Statistics ‘Run that Town’.

There were also strong performances from Ogilvy Melbourne, BMF and Mash Design with three each.

The Direct category was the best performing with a total of five. Australia was equal fifth with Japan at this year’s D&ADs. The UK was first with 179, followed by the US with 118, France 48 and Brazil 37.

More than 200 judges – including a record ten from Australia – spent the week at London’s Olympia scrutinising some 22,000 pieces of work. Entries from Australia were up 18% on 2013 to more than 700.

The D&AD Awards are considered among the hardest to win in world advertising and design and are highly coveted in the creative community.
