MasterChef gets cooking as AFL relegates House Rules

MasterChef Australia made an appearance in the top 10 free-to-air programs last night, while House Rules was relegated to 20th place thanks to the AFL.

Ten's MasterChef Australia won an audience of 882,000, making it the fifth most-watched show.

But Seven's House Rules, which was dumped in Melbourne and Adelaide in favour of the Sydney versus Geelong AFL match, only aired in Sydney and Brisbane. As a result it won just 498,000 viewers.

7mate showed the AFL in Sydney and Brisbane.

The most-watched free-to-air program across Australia's five metro areas was Nine News, with 1.143 million viewers, according to preliminary overnight ratings figures from OzTam.

It was followed by Seven News, with 1.112 million viewers, and Nine News at 6.30, with 1.077 million.

Consumer watchdog show The Checkout, on ABC1, which was back with a new episode after several weeks of showing compilations of best bits, made it into eighth place with 754,000 viewers.

The ABC's Call the Midwife also made the top 10, in seventh spot with an audience of 835,000.

Completing the top 10 was Nine's A Current Affair, fourth with 985,000 viewers, Seven's Today Tonight, sixth with 864,000, ABC News, ninth with 745,000, and the ABC's 7.30, 10th with 700,000.
