Viral Brand Chart: O2 wants to be more dog, Honda, Miley Cyrus and more

18 July 2013

Entering the viral chart this week with close to two million views is the latest ad spot for O2, created by London based ad agency VCCP.

Now, it’s no secret that cats have an uncanny ability to whip internet users into a frenzy, I myself have to admit to whiling away many a long hour surfing through kitten videos online, (purely in the name of research of course).

It’s clear that the audience-luring power of cat videos has made them into a surprisingly effective business tool for advertisers but what if cats suddenly decided to be more like dogs? What if, instead of being stereotypically nonchalant felines, cats suddenly started to embrace life with the enthusiasm of a dog? Well, that’s the premise behind the latest campaign from O2, and the brand has even released a fun little behind the scenes video to explain exactly why you should be ‘more dog’.

Opening with a bored looking sleepy kitty, the narrator explains; "I used to be a cat. Everyday the same. I'd be aloof 'til lunch then coldly indifferent after… To me everything was - meh. Then it hit me - why be so cat, why not be a bit more dog?"

Cut to the cat tearing through a field, chasing sticks, jumping in a river and generally being all dog-like, all to the heroic tune of the Flash Gordon sound track – Kaboom! Now go out and buy a dog, or a cat, or a mobile phone, or something?!

Honda is also trending in the Brand Chart this week with a new ad spot from Wieden + Kennedy London. The two-minute film was created by Nexus' animation duo, Adam Foulkes and Alan Smith, the directors behind the brand’s previous award winning ads, Honda Grrr and Unpredictable life.

It’s quite a cute little video celebrating some of Honda’s most successful innovations over the years with a story of technology and design from an engineers perspective, featuring a pair of hands playing about with animated miniature models as they transform from cars, to bikes and even little robots.

The DRUM UGC Chart – top trending homemade and entertainment virals

Moving over to the UGC Chart and beatboxer Tom Thum has topped this weeks listings with an impressive performance at TEDxSydney that went viral last week. Armed with nothing more than a microphone, Thum pushes the limits of the human voice to create incredible soundtracks, with the didgeridoo, scratched vinyl, and an entire fifties jazz band amongst his vocal repertoire.

Miley Cyrus’ new single “We Can’t Stop” has also been trending across YouTube this week, possibly not for reasons she would be particularly pleased about though! The music video has become fodder for a whole range of spoof parody tributes, even Rebecca Black is getting involved!

Elsewhere in the chart; Kids React to the "controversial" Cheerios commercial in the latest FinBros video to go viral; an antelope has a lucky escape from a cheetah when it jumps straight through the window of a tourist's car on Safari; and we learn exactly how astronauts wash their hair in space with an awesome video from the International Space Station.
