THE ADNEWS NGEN BLOG: A Newbie's Perspective

2 October 2012

Fresh faced and just out of uni, I was fortunate enough to gain a position within Mediacom Brisbane in June 2012. While I was eager to begin my new role, I was also anxious as to how I would fit into the mechanics of such a renowned company. Adding to this anxiety was the fact that this was my first “real world job”, not to mention that I had never studied or had experience in Media Planning or Buying.

If only I knew then, how welcoming and accepting the industry would be!

After stepping through the doors of Mediacom, each and every person was happy to help me settle in and brought positivity to the whole experience. I was amazed at how close everyone was and soon realised that these bonds transcended our office and was apparent in how our team members and others in the industry interacted with the media on a daily basis. We are all here to do a job, but it’s done in a way that reflects the mutual respect we have for each other.

The other element which really surprised me is the industry’s ongoing objective to offer development and training to employees no matter their level of experience. Even though I was by far the newest team member in the office, I was provided with an abundance of helpful training sessions, activities and seminars.

In particular, the initiative of NGen has been great in allowing me to meet others in the industry while attending workshops that expand my knowledge and skills. I believe these workshops and training sessions run effectively as everyone is there for the same purpose, to better themselves and subsequently their work.

When I attended my first NGen function I was able to meet a diverse bunch of media and agency team members who provided ‘the new guy’ with some great insights into the advertising and media worlds. I believe this is one of the industries greatest strengths, providing an environment which gives us all the chance to be ourselves and interact with others on both a professional and personal level.

Although I’m only approaching my five month anniversary, I can safely say that this is a dynamic, ever-changing industry that was a perfect starting point for my career. I am grateful to have learnt so much thus far and excited at what prospects lie ahead.
