THE ADNEWS NGEN BLOG: A Day at Wayside

12 August 2013

This humble chapel has provided unconditional love, care and support for people on and around the streets of Kings Cross since 1964. Fortunately for us, NGen gave us the opportunity to play a small part in that in late July. With the help and support from friends, colleagues, reluctant housemates and parents, we were all able to raise enough funds to be a part of this incredible cause.

The day began with quick meet and greet with the other NGeners taking part, all girls I might add (c’mon boys!). We then met our lovely host Marcus who came across as every bit the big brother of the community at The Wayside Chapel, chatting and making us all feel at home from the start. We delved deeply into the background of Kings Cross and why The Wayside Chapel is so essential for the community.

We began our experience on foot with a walking tour of Kings Cross and surrounds, being shown where essential community services were dotted amongst the fast food restaurants, pubs and clubs. We walked, talked and learnt what it was like to be involved in this charity as well as what the homeless people of Sydney go through on a daily basis. We prepared, cooked and served rissoles with mash and gravy to over 60 people. After serving lunch to everyone, we had the great opportunity to spend some time just chatting and listening to their stories.

When it came to cleaning up the pots and pans, we all looked at each other with desperation but managed to struggle through and the dirty pans were done and dusted in no time. This gave us a moment to reflect on the day’s experience while on the beautiful rooftop garden overlooking the city high-rises. The tranquility and peace of the rooftop garden summed up the warm glow we all felt after our day at Wayside.

The Wayside Chapel experience was truly inspirational. They provide the community with meals, clothes, showers, youth initiation and assistance programs as well as just a place for everyone to feel welcome and a part of a community. I am humbled and honoured to have been a part of such a fantastic day and hope they will give me the pleasure of returning again soon, although I may need to scratch up on my gravy making skills - it turns out clumpy does not mean tasty.

I know I speak for the whole team when I say The Wayside Chapel was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. I would like to thank The Wayside Chapel as well as its staff and regulars for being so welcoming and kind.
