Ode to Cannes: Wonder's Glen Condie on the new kid on the block

18 June 2013

My post yesterday talked about the ever-increasing number of categories at Cannes. Today I wanted to focus on the newest category, Innovation.

Now I’m not exactly sure what this category is all about. If previous years are any indication it takes a few years for a new category to, not so much find its feet, but define what it is all about. I suspect Innovation will be no different.

It is also interesting that the shortlisted have to present to the jury rather than the submission alone being considered, as is the case for all other categories. I wonder how much influence some of the bigger personalities and better presenters will have on the ultimate result.

One thing that I have noted is that there is a real buzz around Innovation, not too dissimilar to the introduction of Titanium. David Droga is the Jury President, which says plenty. I caught up with David and a couple of the other Jury members last night including Aussie Emad Tahtouh. They were pretty pumped up about the Innovation category and were clearly trying to figure out exactly what it is and will stand for.

I also spoke with Cannes Lions Chair Terry Savage who I have to say was as enthusiastic as I have ever seen him about a new addition to the festival. He went on to say that he thought this will be a game changer for the festival.

I’m not sure exactly what we are going to see but I for one am super interested. Tomorrow we will know.

It’s also great to see Australia with a couple of shots on the shortlist. Best of luck fellas.
