Countdown of Awesome: Stride's chewable game, remote control pets and Stiegl's transport beer label

27 June 2013

This week’s awesomeness includes a device to remotely play with your pets through your phone, a mobile game with chewable navigation and a beer bottle’s free public transport ticket label.

Number 5) Petcube – play with your pets remotely
Petcube from the Ukraine is a small box containing a wide angle camera, microphone, speaker and robotic laser which you can use to remotely play with your pets wherever you are. You can access the wifi-connected device via your phone to call out to the animals if not in view and the controllable laser to play with them. If you don’t have a pet, don’t worry, as there’s a public library so you can play with other people’s.

Number 4) Gumulon: Stride Gum’s chew-controlled mobile game
Welcome to Gumulon, a world where you use your mouth to chew your way through a dangerous underground world. The game uses facial recognition to let you use your mouth to take control of Ace, an alien miner on the run from a terrifying monster. The tone of voice and artwork are charming, not to mention its unbeatable tagline ‘Chew the Future’.

Number 3) Kontor records: The Office Turntable
How do you get agency creative directors to sit up and take notice of your new demo CD? Kontor records came up with an ingenious answer by sending out a mailer to promote Boris Dlougosch’s new album which combines a 2D Technics-style turntable which uses your smartphone as the needle.

Number 2) Surrender Your Say for Tourette’s
What better way to demonstrate the distress of having to face Tourette’s than to cede complete control over your own Twitter handle for 24 hours? That was the ingenious concept from the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada.

"Imagine if you Tweeted something embarrassing, offensive, or just plain weird - and you had no control over it. That’s what it’s like to have Tourette Syndrome," the Surrender Your Say site writes.

Number 1) Stiegl’s Beer Label Ticket Home
Austrian beer brand Stiegl came up with an ingenious attempt to deter drink driving by replacing the beer bottle’s label with a public transport ticket home. Developed by design firm Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann, the concept was implemented in Salzburg at Christmas time – when people are of course far more likely to be drinking a little more than usual. In place of the usual label, Stiegl attached a ticket for use on the city’s public transport systems. Simple but brilliant.
