Countdown of Awesome: RedBull continues to raise the bar

11 October 2012

Almost every week Redbull produce content worthy of appearing on this blog but this week they have truly outdone themselves with two entries making the top 5. Prepare yourself for the beautiful, insane and, of course, truly awesome.

Number 5) San Francisco Tilt Shift
For our first entry this week are some pretty amazing shots of San Francisco blended in with the perfect chilled sound track from The XX. Why’s that cool? Because 30k were rendered over 750hrs to create 62 breathtaking timelapse sequences.

Number 4) Digit Hand Tracker: Freehand 3D Computer Interaction
Gesture control may be somewhat old hat since Kinect’s launch yet it hasn’t even come close to reaching its full potential. This prototype hand tracker is capable of capturing the complete movement of the hand and its digits without the need to wear a glove. At the moment the unit looks rather bulky and unsightly but it will no doubt soon have the micro treatment and be slimmed down and integrated into a watch or wrist band. The video includes a few ideas on how the technology might be used, but what do you reckon?

Number 3) RedBull Human-powered Freerunning Machine (Rube Goldberg)

We’ve all no doubt seen a Rube Goldberg by now, with many brands having made intricately designed ads based on the concept. Usually a ball rolls around some crazy contraption, but what if you took out the ball and replaced it with a person with unnatural athleticism, and of course no fear?

Number 2) Wonderbra Decoder app
It’s hard to go wrong when you campaign involves a Slovakian super model and bras. Despite this, Wonderbra have added spice to their campaign by offering consumers the ability to undress Adriana Cernanova with their ‘Wonderbra Decoder app’ to reveal the right underwear for any outfit.

Number 1) RedBull Stratos – The biggest jump in history
In 1960, US air force pilot Joe Kittinger jumped from a balloon at 102,800ft setting a world record that has not been broken to this day. It has taken RedBull 5 years of preparation to design and build a space capsule capable of taking Felix Baumgartner 23 miles straight up from the surface of the earth. Baumgartner has many sky diving records but he and no one before him as ever broken the sonic barrier to go beyond Mach 1 in a freefall. The record breaking jump is set to take place in the next few days pending weather.
