Countdown of Awesome: Red Bull Imaginate, holograms and Honda Hands

18 July 2013

This week’s innovation roundup includes Holovision’s real-life holograms, Honda’s impressive Hands and an epic Red Bull viral film with an imaginative twist.

Number 5) Holovision
Finally, 35 years since Star Wars’ release it looks like we’re all going to be able to have our very own Princess Leia style hologram. Holovision are developing a human-sized, floating hologram projected from a 3D display. Unlike others which use special glasses, virtual reality goggles, or cunning mirrors, this one literally hovers in air standing next to you. The project has 27 days left on Kickstarter with the option of taking your holographic-self home for a modest $10k investment.

Number 4) Evacuated Tube Transport
In yet another case of real life catching up with sci-fi, Colorado-based company ET3 is planning to build the first hyperloop transportation system. Utilising vacuum-sealed tubes, six-person capsules will be propelled up to speeds of 6,500 km/hr enabling New York to LA in just 45 mins, or a traverse of the entire globe in just 6 hours. All while only feeling the G-forces similar to a car ride.

Number 3) Honda Hands
Honda has released a beautifully engineered viral film which showcases their engineers’ achievements over the last 65-years with everything from lawn-mowers and robots, motorbikes and sports cars included. The film is from W&K London, with an Engineers’ Cut microsite developed by Collective London allowing you to pause and check out ‘engineering notes’ with each innovation. A fortnight post release it’s had north of 4m views.

Number 2) Peloton exercise bike live streams gym classes
The Peleton exercise bike is a fascinating development in remote connected fitness. It has a tablet interface so you can take live classes from the comfort of your home. Through Facebook you can join a class with friends and via the integrated camera and mic offer them moral support or, as you see fit, some good old fashioned sledging.

Number 1) Danny MacAskill’s Imaginate
Number 1 this week is yet another awesome viral film from Redbull. But instead of featuring the usual epic locations and journeys, the brand’s taken a far more imaginative stance. The film features a childhood Danny MacAskill building a bike park out of his toys, which as an adult he smashes out the most incredible tricks.
