Countdown of Awesome: Mini and Ray-Ban take on Barbie

21 February 2013

This week’s the turn of the big brands to get creative with innovative projects from Adidas, Mini, Ray-Ban and even Barbie.

Number 5) Ray Ban real-world Instagram
First off this week is a concept from Ray Ban to let people experience their Ambermatic sunglasses by creating a retro filter for their digital photos. The idea is that you send through a snap to Ray Ban via a custom mobile app and they then reshoot it through a pair of their tinted sunglasses, before pinging it back to you. It’s a novel way of helping people literally see for themselves what Ambermatic sunglasses are like, even if the user journey of downloading an app specifically to take a photo which is then re-snapped from a monitor’s display, is a little unusual.

Number 4) Barbie digital makeover mirror
Next up is a lovely idea from Mattel which they showed off at the International Toy Fair just last week. Barbie Digital Makeover uses an iPad as a vanity mirror so girls can virtually try on different shades of lipstick, eye shadow and glitter without making a complete mess. Facial recognition helps them apply the makeup in the right place. If happy with their look, they can then share on Facebook.
Whilst the media choices could be a little questionable, it’s a lovely idea you can certainly imagine kids being hooked on. So perhaps parents will be happy to donate their iPad and turn a blind eye to Facebook’s minimum age policy…

Number 3) Adidas fashion show live streams
There have been a fair few innovations in fashion showcased in this column over the past few months such as Top Shop streaming clothes live from the catwalk to Facebook where people could snap them up and the Diane Von Furstenburg Google Glasses project, featured last September. For the launch of Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 collection at NY Fashion Week, Adidas found a nice angle of their own. Four angles to be precise, which enabled the online audience to gain four unique perspectives of the event. Screenshots could be taken instantly and pinned to Pinterest boards with the touch of a button.

Number 2) Many Worlds – A movie that watches you while you watch it
Many Worlds is an innovative short film format that changes its story depending on the audience’s reactions to its. Before the movie starts, four audio members are strapped up with biological detection sensors to pick up muscle tension, brain waves, heart rate and even sweat levels. This data then helps the movie identify the interactivity level and mood so the film can select upcoming scenes accordingly. If the audience members are feeling restless, the movie may insert intense, slow music to induce fear. If the screeners are bored, an exciting action sequence may appear to keep their attention. It’s basically a Choose Your Own Adventure-type film, except all the choosing magically appears according to the way your body reacts.

Number 1) Mini “Rock n’ Roll for the Road” record player
The prestigious ‘most awesome position of the week’ goes to Mini for a piece of direct mail.  Not just any letter box stuffer, but a lovely idea to showcase its ‘Rock n’ Roll’ and retro nature by including a record and needle to enable to play a sound track from within the advertising. The 4-sided pack cardboard brochure opens out with one side resting on the record which has the needle. On spinning the record around Mini engine sounds are played from the novel record player before a a a tune kicks in. Whilst the music isn’t the most Rock n’ Roll, the execution seems is very cool. Good timing too with Cannes Lions just around the corner…
