Countdown of Awesome: iPhone 5S dominoes, iOS robots and Durex Fundawear

26 April 2013

This week’s awesomeness from around the web includes a domino viral featuring 10k iPhone 5S’s, the must-have Romotive iPhone robot and Durex’s cheeky Fundawear project.

Number 5) 10k iPhone dominoes
Starting off this week is a domino stunt featuring 10,000 iPhone 5’s. Created by concept video outfit Aatma Studios it features a chain of falling iPhones that quickly escalates into something far beyond typical workplace shenanigans. They’ve looked to showcase the iPhone 5S’s fantasy NFC feature passing content from one to another as they touch. This of course required a little creative license (i.e. CGI), but it doesn’t detract from the cunningness of the stunt.

Number 4) Webcam pulse detector
In Number 4 is a fantastically smart application that detects the heart-rate of an individual in real-time using only their web cam. The app determines optical intensity of the forehead location to estimate the user’s heart beat frequency. Physiological data can apparently be estimated this way thanks to the optical absorption characteristics of hemoglobin. With good lighting and minimal noise due to motion, a stable heartbeat can be isolated in just 15 seconds. Hopefully this will help inspire some great self-diagnosis medical applications.

Number 3) Puppets from Dare Labs
Next up is a really smart application that lets kids combine an iPhone and iPad together to create a puppet show. It’s an experiment in “providing better ways for children to interact with technology that are social and let them use their imagination”. If you’re interested in such cross-platform cleverness from Dare Labs, check-out the Remote Pallet also which they launched back in 2010 [certainly a declared bias here as an ex Dare planner].

Number 2) Durex Fundaware
Durex’s Fundaware project promises to let you feel your lover’s touch from anywhere on the planet. Tiny vibrating actuators typically found in smartphones are sewn into lingerie so people can send ‘touch’ to one another. The intensity of vibrations correspond to the movements of the person's finger touching the smartphone screen from afar. What do you reckon – a step too far or great brand execution?

Number 1) Romotive
Romo, the incredible iPhone robot, has received its second injection of Kickstarter funding and now has an impressive list of updates. He’s now faster, has a tilting "head' to follow your movements, works with an iPhone as his brain, and even more impressively any other iOS device can control him. If you’re not familiar with the project, definitely check out the inspiring Ted Talk video.

The retail price for June shipping is an impressive US$149. Yet another integral gadget to clutter up your house…
