Countdown of Awesome: Future timeline, lenticular outdoor and second-screen radio

8 May 2013

This week’s countdown includes an Instagram app to identify your food, the Facebook timeline of your future career, and a strong hint at the future of second-screen radio.

Number 5) @AskCTFood – Instagram to educate users about Asian cooking
Ever wondered how on earth to cook a delicious Asian meal you’ve just had? CTFood, an Asian food supplier in Sweden, has come up with a smart social campaign to tell you how. Just upload a picture of your Asian dish to the company’s Instagram handle @AskCTFood, and specialists at the company will comment back with a comprehensive list of ingredients, along with a recipe to make the dish yourself.

Number 4) The Covert Hearing Test
DraftFCB Toronto have come up with a cunning way to encourage people to consider getting their hearing tested – by using an eye testing video. Sounds intriguing? Well I won’t give away the plot – experience it for yourself in the video below (headphones required).

Number 3) Lenticular child abuse ad

Lenticular printing has been around since the 1940s but is one of those timeless technologies which only every now and then someone finds a great use for. Fundación Anar in Spain has done just that by sensitively using a lenticular outdoor ad to display a separate message appearing at ‘child height’ with a secret hotline number for abused children to call. ‘Adult height’ just displays a general awareness message for charity.

Number 2) OZU university: future Facebook timeline
Ozu university in Istanbul has come up with a smart way of demonstrating their future successful selves using Facebook Timeline. The Facebook app challenges students with decisions on their future and presents an idyllic life ahead that the university would allow them to experience, should they choose to study there. It then delivers a future timeline version of their life 5 years post graduating at the university. A brilliant imaginary concept or perhaps a little contrived – what do you reckon?

Number 1) Sverige Radio Plus – the second-screen Swedish Radio app
Number one this week goes to a great ‘second-screen’ style concept for Sverige Radio (Swedish Radio). Forsman & Bodenfors have created an interactive radio player for computers, tablets and mobile to encourage people to tag social content alongside ‘traditional’ radio content. The idea is that social content will make the long radio programmes much more engaging and sharable. Listeners can tag content to specific time codes so it appears in their newsfeeds. Clicking on any link then takes the user back to that same time-stamped audio content complete with social content. With numerous companion devices for print and TV, is this first of many for radio?
