Countdown of Awesome: Double mind control, cyborg critters and touching

11 October 2013

5) Domains4good

Domains4good is a super smart way to utilise all the domain names in the internet graveyard of failed dreams. It could be argued that people that click on justindrewbieber.com aren’t actively looking to donate or participate with a charity but in our view any extra traffic and awareness can only be a good thing.

4) Cyborg cockroaches

In a recent Ted talk neuroscientist Greg Gage demonstrated that it’s possible to control a cockroach with a smart phone. The technology which requires fairly invasive surgery for the cockroach is controversially now available as a kit for anyone to buy. Despite the ethical concerns of Roboroach, getting neuroscience technology in the hands of excited kids and students can only be beneficial for the discipline.

3) Fox bring in massive touch screens

Minority Report is getting closer, we have 55-inch touch displays being used on Fox News. The displays are used by journalists to scour the web for breaking news and quickly pick up the stories to gain that competitive edge. It’s a glimpse into the future of the newsroom.

2) AppSeed: Hand drawn apps

This Kickstarter project will allow those of us with decent drawing skills and zero coding skills the ability to produce our own apps easily and quickly. We can see this being the perfect tool for scamping app ideas as proof of concept and to sell into clients.

1) Melbourne 'Remote Control Tourist'

As Sydney locals we are always told Melbourne has a really unique vibe and is full of interesting and trendy bars, cafes, boutiques and galleries. Users can or could log on to the website and see firsthand the narrow alleys and bright street art that Melbourne is known for and if you feel inclined tweet the remote control tourists and get them to visit where ever you want them to. The website is a piece of art itself, definitely check this one out while it’s still live.

Thanks to everyone who helps bring this blog together each week, finding the great stuff with your productive procrastinating.
