Countdown of Awesome: Adidas' Smart Ball, tank hammers and the horror invite

10 July 2013

This week’s gems include Adidas’ connected football, the ultimate find-my-stuff social smartphone app and the DIY hammer made from a melted down tank.

Number 5) Horror film stalks patrons for RSVPs
How do you get people who’ve taken an interest in a horror movie festival to RSVP? By virtually scaring them into submission apparently. Staying true to the Elmstas 3000 ‘Home Invasion’ festival’s theme, unsuspecting Swedes were sent a picture from outside their house. 30 mins later another read ‘we’re in your living room’. Googling that displayed ‘We’re in your kitchen’. Frantically clicking its link then revealed all, before encouraging an RSVP. Check out the video on PSFK.

Number 4) Hornback Tank Hammer
German hardware store Hornbach came up with the ultimate DIY nerd stunt by melting down an entire tank and forging into 7,000 hammers. Because what every DIY nut really needs is of course a hammer made from a tank. They then sold them through Facebook and select stores in an apparent ‘record time’. It’s definitely an obscure record so they’ll likely to hang on to it for a while…

Number 3) Adidas Smart Ball
Adidas’ Smart Ball is fitted with an accelerometer and magnetometer so you can see exactly where you strike the ball and determine its trajectory. Through synching the data with your smartphone you can get real-time feedback during training and perfect your strike technique. Here’s Zinedine Zidane showing it in action – probably not someone whose technique would have needed that much additional perfecting mind…

Number 2) Tile – the world’s largest lost and found
Tile, the clever app that enables you to locate your stuff wherever it may be lurking, is now being shipped to Australia. Whilst ‘find my stuff’ connected tags are not entirely new, Tile’s cunning extension is that its uses the Bluetooth connection of neighbouring Tile apps to cast a far wider net then your phone’s limited range allows. On making a Tile outside of your range as missing, the app sends out an alert through its cloud based app that puts all other Tile apps on the search for your missing item.

Number 1) Mobilising the 12th Man
Due to the Tunisian government’s restrictions of public gatherings, supporting your football team in just isn’t possible. For their must-win game of the season, CS Hammam-Lif had to find a way to into their fans’ vociferous support to give them edge they’d need over their rivals. They created the 12th Man, an app connected to 40 speakers inside the stadium so fans could tap on the app’s icons and relay their audible support. The result – 1-0 to CS Hammam-Lif! Not to mention five silver and two bronze lions at Cannes.
