Ben Welsh: Maybe it's just as well I don't have a camera

19 June 2012

M&C Saatchi's executive creative director reckons enough has already been written about the Lions, so he focuses on all the photo opportunities instead. The only problem is he forgot his camera.

First, an apology. There will be few, if any photos in this blog. I didn’t pack a camera, deciding that my iPhone would suffice. However, my iPhone is now incapable of taking any meaningful photographs. Sadly it slipped out of my pocket and travelled deep into the inner workings of my airline seat. I wondered why the seat kept sticking while I attempted to adjust it and what those strange crunching and grating noises were. Landing in Heathrow an engineer took the seat to bits and retrieved what was left.

Tant pis as they say in these parts.

Judging has been going on for a few days in a number of categories and I’m sure you’ve read the blogs. The first two shortlists have appeared and the winners may be out by the time this is. So I’m not going to talk about the Lions. I’m going to focus on the town, because it is an extraordinary place.

Here is a list of what I would have liked to have photographed.

The yachts in the bay. Or should I call them ships? They must be 150 to 200 ft long. I read of one for which it cost $1million just to fill the tank.

Suede loafers in every colour of the rainbow.

Linen shirts and pants cut for the more stately gentleman available in every colour of the rainbow.

Stout gentlemen who have chosen a unique combination of the above.

Skin so dark and leathery you’d be tempted to call it upholstery.

Yet another Porsche Panamera – they’re not exactly common, but they certainly aren’t rare and they only just make it down the narrow streets.

The matt black Lamborghini outside The Carlton.

The dogs. One of which was being taken for a walk in a pram.

The people on the beach – some topless since 1978, more upholstery.

Maybe it’s just as well I don’t have a camera.
