Telstra to take NRL digital rights for $100m

Telstra is reportedly on the verge of signing a digital rights deal with the NRL worth around $100 million, months after the code's broader media deal was inked with Nine and Fox Sports.

According to reports in both Fairfax and News Limited, the digital rights deal will last five years and is worth $100 million.

Telstra is the incumbent on the business, and previously paid $90 million for six years.

The figure of $100 million is less than the $150 million that Telstra paid for the digital rights for the AFL.

The deal will reportedly also see Telstra remain as a major sponsor of the NRL competition.

Earlier in the year, the code inked a $1 billion deal with Nine and Fox Sports for broadcast rights over  the next five years.

However, at the time the industry was hanging out to hear which company would take the digital rights, and many pundits had suggested that Nine had lost out by not buying any digital rights in the deal.

Fox Sports had secured some IPTV and tablet rights, but Nine had not bought any digital rights.

The $100 million deal will reportedly see Telstra take the right to broadcast games across IPTV, mobile, tablet and online.
