Sports and music shows under knife at Ten

Ten's Pyrmont building has gotten a face lift

Network Ten is likely to axe daily bulletin Sports Tonight and music video show Video Hits as acting CEO Lachlan Murdoch cuts costs.

Sports Tonight has been running for 20 years and producer Craig Reynolds is reported to have been made redundant. Video Hits has been on air since 1986 and is the network's longest running music video program.

There is speculation that 6:30 with George Negus and Late News will also be axed within the next 12 months.

The network has offered voluntary redundancies to staff who are on enterprise agreements but a spokesperson told AdNews that the process was ongoing and it was too early to confirm the number of redundancies.

It has been reported that up to 60 jobs have been slashed across areas including editorial, operational and sales, and the number is likely to increase.

Ten is rumoured to have sacked people working in sales teams across Ten and multichannels, Eleven and one.

The move follows the network's decision last week to walk away from AFL broadcasting rights, leaving Seven with the entire set.

Murdoch said in an email to staff on Sunday night that the cutbacks were necessary in an ''increasingly crowded, and increasingly competitive'' market.
