MasterChef Australia was second only to Home and Away on the free-to-air networks last night, making the most of its breathing space away from The Voice and House Rules.

Masterchef, on Ten, won 870,000 viewers across Australia's five metro areas, putting it as seventh most-watched show overall and second most-watched in the 7.30pm slot – a big improvement on last Thursday's 578,000 viewers for the Class of 2014 behind-the-scenes special.

Seven's Home and Away, meanwhile, won an audience of 972,000, according to preliminary overnight ratings figures from OzTam.

Nine's The Voice and Seven's House Rules are now off-air until Sunday night.

The ABC's Call the Midwife also made the top 10 last night, with an audience of 841,000 putting it in eighth place.

And Seven's Million Dollar Minute rounded out the top 10 with 740,000 viewers tuning in.

News programs ranked the highest, with Seven News at the top with 1.229 million viewers. It was followed by Nine News, with 1.104 million, and Seven's Today Tonight, in third with 1.083 million.

Nine News at 6.30 was fifth, with an audience of 970,000, Nine's A Current Affair was sixth with 876,000, and ABC News was ninth with 769,000.
