A Nike ad featuring Oscar Pistorius has been removed after the athlete was charged with the murder of his girlfriend.

The print ad featured the tagline “I am the bullet in the chamber” was previously on Pistorius' website and has been taken down. He is alleged to have shot his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in the head and arm yesterday.

The sportswear giant has released a statement expressing its sympathies over the shooting but has declined to further comment on the matter.

Nike, which sponsors many sportspeople over the world, has had an unfortunate recent history with its athletes. In the past few years, the brand has been embroiled in scandals associated with Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong.

Pistorius sponsors Oakley and BP Global have also declined to comment on their standings with him.
