News night: Reality shows make way for news to lead ratings

With The Block over for another season and My Kitchen Rules taking a break until next Monday, it was a night of news domination on the free-to-air networks last night.

News and current affairs programs took out eight of the top 10 most-watched shows across Australia's five metro areas, according to preliminary overnight ratings figures from OzTam.

Nine won the night, taking 28% of the free-to-air audience share, thanks to Nine News and Nine News at 6.30 being the top two shows with audiences of 1.268 million and 1.186 million respectively.

Seven followed, with 27.6% of the audience share. It's most-watched programs were Seven News and Today Tonight, with 1.183 million and 1.085 million viewers respectively.

Nine's The Big Bang Theory won the biggest audience of the non-news programs, in seventh spot with 1.015 million viewers.

Seven's Home and Away was the other non-news show in the top 10, in ninth spot with an audience of 943,000.

Completing the top 10 were ABC News Update, in fifth spot with 1.064 million viewers, the ABC's Australian Story, sixth with 1.062 million, ABC News, eighth with 956,000, and Nine's A Current Affair, 10th with 937,000.
