News Limited has named Stephen Browning acting director of communications.
The announcement follows the departure of director of communications Greg Baxter last week.
Browning was previously director of corporate affairs across News Digital and The Australian. Browning oversaw the communications launch of The Australian's paywall model last year and is widely regarded to have orchestrated a successful PR offensive, which included the unveiling of a website called The Future of Journalism, which Browning himself curates.
In the new role, Browning will be responsible for leading internal and external communications, reporting directly to News Limited chief executive Kim Williams.
Williams said: “As the company goes through a substantial transformation program it is of central importance that our internal and external communications are managed and executed carefully.
“Since joining News at the end of last year I have been enormously impressed with Stephens work and want him to play a key role in our new corporate affairs and communications team.”
Browning joined News Limited in 2006 as manager of corporate communications. In 2008 he was appointed director of corporate affairs for News Digital Media, taking additional responsibility for The Australian in 2010.
Yesterday, Corin Dimopoulos was appointed group marketing director of News Limited after the departure of Ed Smith to Foxtel.
