Former News Limited boss John Hartigan has joined Prime Media Group as chairman, following the passing of founder and long-serving chairman Paul Ramsay AO.

"I am excited to be joining Prime Media at a time of such rapid change and opportunity across the media landscape," Hartigan said in a statement. "It is a privilege to work with such a strong management team."

Prime Media Group chief executive Ian Audsley said: "In my mind, there is no person better suited, or better qualified than John Hartigan to lead the board and the company into the future.

"It’s a tremendous vote of confidence in our business and our people. We very much look forward to the fresh perspectives that John will bring to our business."

Hartigan stepped down from the top job at News in November 2011 after a 41-year career with the company. He was replaced by the ill-fated Kim Williams, who was dramatically ousted at the end of last year.
