Westfield has kicked off the first phase of its incubator scheme to support up-and-coming fashion designers at this week's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia.

The retail giant is principal sponsor for Aussie designers Dion Lee, Romance Was Born and We Are Handsome at this week's fashion event.

Westfield's support of the designers marks the first phase of a program it will continue to roll out this year to nurture talent in the fashion industry and move its linear business model to something more innovative.

The next stage of the program will see several Aussie designers featured in Victoria's Westfield Doncaster in a special retail space, called InHabit, from August.

InHabit will let Australian designers leverage the premium retail space for a short term.

Peter Leslie, director of leasing at Westfield, said: “We are working on other ways to fulfil our program of nurturing and offering guidance to Australian designers later in 2014 to build on our current program of activity.”
