One of Australia's leading online publisher's Ninemsn has become the latest digital organisation to join the Australian Press Council.

Ninemsn is the largest digital publisher so far to join the Press Council, and it has been suggested this move may encourage other digital publishers to follow suit.

Australian Press Council chair Professor Julian Disney said: “The admission of Ninemsn is another significant step in the Council’s coverage of online media.

“Ninemsn is one of the most popular news sites in Australia. By joining the Press Council, it has shown a commitment to maintaining high standards of practice, and a willingness to be part of an independent system for handling complaints.”

The Press Council's Standards of Practice has covered the websites of print publishers for some time, but the addition of Ninemsn will generate digital credibility for the industry body.

Many digital publishers have been slow to join the Press Council.

Ninemsn is half owned by Nine entertainment Co and half owned by Microsoft.
