DHL's Trojan Mailing stunt: Brilliant marketing or mean trick?

German agency Jung Von Matt has a viral hit on its hands with a hidden camera prank for shipping company DHL – but the social media jury is out.

The stunt, which saw packages painted with the hidden message 'DHL Is Faster' under heat-sensitive foil and sent on their way with rival delivery companies, has attracted more than four million views on YouTube.

While the video has racked up the hits, the reaction has been mixed, with some commenters taking issue with the brand playing a prank on unsuspecting delivery drivers.

DHL has subsequently distanced itself, telling The Consumerist: "This was not something that was initiated by DHL. The video was created by an external agency for their own internal competition. We were aware in advance of the intention to use it for this purpose. We were not aware of any plans to share it externally."
